This might be a little off topic, but bear with me. One thing led to another and thus the reason for this post.
I pulled out my Sex and the City DVD's and decided to spend the weekend catching up on some old friends (sidenote: I wish they were "edited"..cleaned up..I love the lines and the relationships, HATE the sex scenes). Anyway...there was a scene in one of the episodes when Carrie's boyfriend was cooking dinner. She came home to "some golden oldies" as she so eloquently put it. Guess who was singing? You got it. Barry. Copacabana. Now that's a Barry moment!
And why shouldn't he be in this series. It's about friendship in New York. What better backdrop for his music. And I couldn't help but wonder (Carrie's favorite byline), where would I be without my friends? Lost. They lift me up when I'm down. They laugh with me when I'm in the mood to have some fun. They cry with me when I'm hurt. Most of them live miles away. Some live half way across the world and we have never even met. But I know they are always there...and...
"...It's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart... and if you're very lucky, a plane ride away..."

Barry's Legacy of Music
I decided tonight to catch up on an HBO series that I watch and the family is sitting around in the living room. The oldest son is sitting at the piano playing a song while the they are all talking. I think...wait a minute...I know that intro...and low and behold, it was Copacabana! He played the entire song. It reminded me of Barry's original version on the box set...the one where he's working on the melody along with the lyrics.It made me smile and think...he's so much a part of our lives. Every moment of every day something happens to remind us of him and make us smile. How is it possible that one person can do that for so many people? He really is everywhere, in restaurants, the movies, the mall, the grocery store...his music will live on for years and years to come. What a legacy...made me wish I had a legacy...something that when I'm gone people would smile or sigh and say, "wow, she really touched my life".
We all should have some legacy we leave behind. Barry has found his and it will bless the lives of future generations...I wonder what mine could be?

Say what you want about Copacabana, but that song is probably one of the most recognizable tunes of all time. And as Barry himself says, it's pure genius. In one short song, you have a full length drama. The characters meet, fall in love, a villain appears, one of them is shot and dies, the other pines after him for life.
Most "true" fans, won't admit to liking Copacabana. They balk at the people who only know this song of Barry's and beg for it at the concerts. But let's face it people, it's the highest energy song of the show and it draws the audience in like no other. The tune is catchy. The lyrics are genius rhymes. It really is a masterpiece of musicianship. Annoying? Perhaps... Catchy? For sure.... Most requested? Look at the statistics.... Showstopper? Absofreakinglutely!
